Hillsdale, NJ Fence Permits: Local Rules and Planning Questions
An open front-yard fence and a private rear-yard fence solve different problems. For a Hillsdale property, start by locating the front setback on the survey, then choose the panel style for each section. Our Hillsdale fence installation page explains the service options; this guide focuses on questions to resolve before ordering.
Check the setback line before choosing a height
Hillsdale Code §310-56 generally limits residential fences closer to a street than the district's front setback line to four feet; at or behind that line, the cap is six feet. Front-yard fences must be at least 50% open.
Ask the Zoning Official to identify the relevant setback on your plan. A fence beside a driveway can cross from one yard condition into another. Label the start and end of each height instead of submitting one note that says “six-foot fence.”
A corner needs a separate measurement
Within 25 feet of the intersection of two street lines, the code limits height to four feet above curb level. It also prohibits chain-link fences in a front yard and requires fences within property lines, without street encroachment.
Bring street photographs and a panel drawing to the review. Ask how the intersection area and height will be measured where the ground rises or falls. A project photograph cannot establish the permitted dimensions for your lot.

Use the current application route
Start with Hillsdale's Building, Construction & Zoning Department and official permits and forms directory. Ask which zoning submission, construction permit or inspection applies to a new fence, replacement or pool barrier. Confirm current fees directly; the New Laws list includes a fee amendment.
Prepare your address, block and lot, survey, proposed line, panel heights, gate widths and manufacturer details. Separate removal and replacement work on the drawing. Flag an old fence that differs from the intended line before using it as a layout guide.
Show the finished side and maintenance access
Hillsdale requires supporting posts or fabric supports to face inward. Include that orientation on the proposal before materials arrive.
Think through access for mowing, equipment and cleaning both sides. The New Jersey property-line planning guide helps organize boundary and easement questions. Resolve uncertain boundaries before setting posts.
Compare materials for the reviewed plan
Consider aluminum fence installation for an open appearance and vinyl fence installation for privacy where allowed. Compare actual panel openings and assembled height; a material name alone does not establish compliance.
Request your Hillsdale fence estimate with your survey, yard photos and access needs. We can compare materials around the layout confirmed for your property. The four-step process below covers your estimate, material options, confirmed details and installation.
