Allendale, NJ Fence Permits: Local Rules and Planning Questions

Before choosing panels for fence installation in Allendale, NJ, identify which portions of the proposed line fall in the front, side and rear yards. That distinction matters here: a backyard privacy design and a street-facing fence can follow different height and openness provisions.

Does Allendale require a fence permit?

Allendale’s official fence zoning permit page says a fence zoning application is required and currently lists a $40 fee. It requests a current survey showing the fence location and staking of the proposed line. It also identifies construction-permit requirements for fences over six feet and fences enclosing swimming pools. Confirm current fees and the review required for your proposal before work begins.

Front-yard height and openness need a separate check

The codified Allendale fence requirements in §270-31 require an online zoning application before a fence is erected, altered or reconstructed. The submission describes the fence, height, decorative features, adjoining streets and topographic conditions on a plot plan.

For residential front yards, that section describes open, nonopaque fences up to five feet within 15 feet of lot lines and up to six feet beyond 15 feet. It separately permits rear- and side-yard fencing up to six feet. The Borough’s permit webpage gives a shorter 15-foot height summary without those yard distinctions. Ask zoning staff to confirm the correct yard classification and measurement for each segment of your plan.

What changes on a corner property?

The code requires Allendale Police Department review and approval for corner properties. Show both street frontages rather than treating the second street edge as an ordinary backyard. The code also directs the finished or preferred fence side toward streets and abutting properties when its faces differ.

Before your appointment, photograph driveway exits and street corners from both directions. On your drawing, label gate swings, sidewalks and places where the ground rises. These details help you ask focused questions about visibility; a photograph alone cannot establish an approved fence line.

Prepare the layout before choosing a material

Separate screening needs from open boundaries. Compare vinyl fence installation and wood fence installation for an approved privacy area, or aluminum fence installation for an open appearance. Bring the actual panel specification rather than relying on the product name to establish openness or height.

An old fence or hedge is not a substitute for a verified boundary. Our New Jersey property-line planning guide explains what to gather before setting the final line.

Plan your Allendale estimate

Gather the survey, photos, proposed heights, gate widths and any written zoning guidance. Then request an Allendale fence estimate. Review the four-step installation process below for the next stages, from exploring options and confirming the details to installation and review.
