Fort Lee, NJ Fence Permits: Local Rules and Planning Questions

In Fort Lee, choosing a six-foot fence means more than checking the height. The published fence rule also addresses how open the design must be and where it can sit relative to the house. Check those points before selecting a privacy panel.

Explore fence installation in Fort Lee for design and installation help. This guide focuses on preparing a proposal the Borough can review.

Can I install a tall solid privacy fence in Fort Lee?

Section 410-38D limits solid-material fences to four feet. Above four feet, it calls for a porous design, such as woven wire or members separated to provide at least 50% openness. A taller open fence and a taller solid panel therefore do not satisfy the same published criteria.

Section 410-38A calls for a building-permit application for fences over four feet. Subsection B requires Board of Adjustment authorization before a permit can be issued above six feet. Subsection E says fences under this section must not extend beyond the front portion of the main building.

Read Fort Lee §410-38: fence permits, openness and location. Ask the Borough to confirm the applicable requirements for the exact height, material and location you propose. Do not interpret the four-foot permit threshold as blanket approval for a shorter fence.

What information does the survey need to show?

Subsection C requests a certified survey identifying the parcel boundaries, street frontage, distance from the street-side corner to the nearest intersection, buildings on the applicant's property and neighboring buildings with distances noted.

As a practical preparation step, mark each proposed fence run and gate on a survey copy. Bring the panel specification showing its dimensions and openings. Label any wall, grade change or tight access route that could affect how the fence is positioned or installed.

Where can I confirm the current application and fee?

Use the Fort Lee Building Department's application guidance to reach the office and obtain its current construction-permit packet. Ask how zoning review and any construction or pool-barrier approval apply to your proposal.

The fence subsection contains an old nominal fee. This guide does not present it as the amount currently payable. The Borough's New Laws list includes construction-code fee legislation; confirm the current charges directly before submitting. The reviewed 2026-2 ordinance removes a county-review fee provision rather than amending §410-38.

Choose the product after the layout is confirmed

For an open appearance, compare aluminum fence installation options. If screening is your goal, discuss wood fence installation and vinyl fence installation within the approved dimensions. Material names alone do not establish openness or compliance.

Consider where you need privacy, which views you want to preserve and how people, pets and lawn equipment will pass through the gates. Bring photos of the access route to your estimate so the layout and installation approach can be discussed together.

From estimate to installation

The four-step process below covers requesting an estimate, exploring options, confirming details and reviewing the completed installation. Obtain the required approvals and resolve the boundary layout before work begins.

Official sources checked November 1, 2026. This planning guide summarizes selected provisions, not a property-specific approval. Confirm later amendments, current forms and fees, and any site-specific exceptions with the Borough.
