Maywood, NJ Fence Permits: Local Rules and Planning Questions

On a Maywood corner property, a fence that feels like a backyard boundary can still fall in the street-side area with a lower height limit. Before selecting privacy panels, mark the house's front and rear faces and both street exposures on your survey.

Explore fence installation in Maywood for project help. Use the local references below to discuss the layout with Zoning before committing to materials.

Where does Maywood's lower height limit apply?

Section 209-31.1 generally limits fences to six feet. In the front setback, the maximum is three feet six inches, using a line from the structure's front face to each side boundary. On a corner property, that lower limit also covers the street-side setback up to a line from the structure's rear face to the street-side boundary.

The section also specifies a ten-foot separation from the curbline. Manmade fences normally need at least three inches from the property line; a submitted application and agreement between adjoining owners can modify the boundary placement provision. That agreement is not an exemption from street-side restrictions or other approvals.

Read Maywood §209-31.1: fence height and placement rules. Finished sides face outward, and fences must allow drainage without creating ponding. Ask the reviewer to mark the applicable limits on your plan.

Does a replacement fence need zoning approval?

Maywood's official Building Department permit guidance lists a zoning permit for all fences. Its fee code separately identifies fence installation or replacement. Confirm the current application, fee and any construction or inspection requirements for your proposal rather than relying on the old fence's location.

Use the Maywood forms and applications page to locate the zoning paperwork, and confirm which documents the office needs before submission.

What if my property has a floodway or drainage constraint?

Maywood has a separate flood-hazard fence provision in §184-76. A fence in a regulated floodway needs additional review for its potential to obstruct floodwater and collect debris. An open-looking panel is not automatically acceptable for that purpose. Ask whether this section applies before choosing a continuous barrier or changing an existing drainage route.

See Maywood's flood-hazard fence provision. Where a pool barrier is involved, have the municipality resolve the applicable flood and pool requirements together.

Prepare a layout that is easy to review

On a survey copy, label each fence run by height and material. Show gate widths, driveway edges, curbs, both street exposures, walls and grade changes. Photograph any tight passage where posts, panels or equipment will need access.

Do not treat a hedge, old fence or mowing line as proof of the legal boundary. Resolve the boundary and any easement questions before ordering. The sketch is also useful for discussing how gate swings and future maintenance will work on your property.

Compare designs within the approved space

For screening, consider wood fence installation or vinyl fence installation. For a more open appearance, compare aluminum fence installation options. Match the actual panel dimensions to the approved plan.

Move from planning to installation

The four-step process below covers requesting an estimate, exploring options, confirming details and reviewing the completed installation. Bring your survey and any municipal feedback to the estimate so layout changes can be discussed early.
