Northvale, NJ Fence Permits: Local Rules and Planning Questions

Replacing a fence in Northvale still requires planning: an existing run does not establish permission for the new one. Review the zoning requirements first, then compare fence installation in Northvale, NJ for your yard’s privacy, access and street visibility.

Does replacing a Northvale fence need a zoning permit?

Yes. Northvale’s fence ordinance, §200-15A requires a zoning permit before a residential fence is constructed, installed or replaced, including a pool-barrier fence. Tell the reviewer whether the proposal retains the same line or changes height, style or gate locations.

The Northvale Building Department provides zoning contacts and application information. Confirm the current submittal checklist, fee and any additional construction or pool approvals. A zoning permit and pool-barrier compliance address different parts of the project.

Front-yard and backyard limits are different

Section 200-15A permits six-foot fences in side and rear yards, with height measurement and ground-undulation details in the ordinance. Front-yard fences are limited to four feet, must remain on or within the homeowner’s property and must be at least 10 feet in from the road/curbline. Chain link is prohibited in a front yard.

Bring a panel drawing showing the full height, posts and caps. The code separately addresses panel height, small ground clearances and post or finial height, so a sloping lawn needs a section-by-section layout rather than a single nominal panel measurement.

Corner lots need an extra visibility check

The second front yard on a corner lot may have a four-foot fence maintaining 10 feet from the right-of-way. The ordinance describes where a six-foot run may begin at the rear corner foundation and run parallel to the rear property line. Ask the Zoning Officer to mark that transition on your survey.

Section 200-15A(7) separately restricts fences and other visibility obstructions within 25 feet of a street intersection. Meeting the ten-foot clearance does not by itself settle this visibility requirement. Show both streets, the right-of-way and intersection on your plan.

Choose privacy and gate details after the layout review

Compare vinyl fence installation for backyard screening and aluminum fence installation for an open appearance. Identify any pool-barrier function before selecting openings or gate hardware. The outward-facing side must meet the ordinance’s appearance requirement.

If a boundary is uncertain, begin with our New Jersey property-line planning guide. Then request a Northvale fence estimate with your survey and replacement photos. Our existing four-step process below covers the estimate, material options, confirmed details and installation review.
