Waldwick, NJ Fence Permits: Local Rules and Planning Questions
Waldwick fence planning starts with the yard location and the amount of open space in the design. A panel suitable beside the backyard may face different restrictions near the street or on a corner lot. How does the front-yard openness rule work?
The codified Waldwick fence and wall rules, §97-123.3, distinguish front-yard designs. Subject to the corner-lot provisions, the residential rule limits solid wooden or masonry fences less than 75% open to 30 inches in the required front yard. Fences at least 75% open may reach four feet there. Side- and rear-yard fences may reach six feet.
Select a specific panel before the application review. Bring its dimensions and opening details instead of relying on the name picket or ornamental. Ask the Building Department how the openness test applies to the actual design, especially if the proposed material is not clearly described by the solid-fence wording.

Corner lots need a separate layout review
Section 97-123.3A generally prohibits fences and other vision obstructions in corner-lot front yards. Subsection G provides particular corner-lot arrangements tied to adjoining yard relationships and a setback of one-and-a-half times the required front-yard setback. Have staff determine whether those conditions apply; the ordinary front-yard openness rule alone is not enough.
Show both streets, the house footprint and the adjoining property's yard arrangement on the drawing. Mark the portion you want to enclose and provide photographs from each approach. This helps the reviewer identify whether the desired side-street line fits a permitted arrangement or needs a different location.
Measure a fence and retaining wall together
The code limits a fence on a retaining wall, berm or other man-made feature to six feet above natural grade. It also requires fences within property lines, with the finished side toward the street or adjoining property, without encroaching on a public right-of-way.
Draw natural grade, the wall top and the fence top separately. Adding a standard-height panel above a wall can create a different total height from the panel’s advertised dimension. Ask staff which elevations need to appear on your plan.
Where should I confirm permits and forms?
Contact the Waldwick Building Department, which administers zoning and construction codes and links permit information, forms and the zoning map. Describe any replacement work, wall changes or pool enclosure so staff can identify the applicable approvals and inspection steps.
For design options, compare aluminum fence installation and vinyl fence installation. Use a verified survey for the final line; the New Jersey property-line planning guide explains what to prepare.
