Westwood, NJ Fence Permits: Local Rules and Planning Questions

Replacing a Westwood fence while regrading the yard or rebuilding a retaining wall needs a coordinated plan. Start by recording the existing ground and separating the fence proposal from any wall work. For local design options, see fence installation in Westwood, NJ.

How does Westwood measure fence height?

Under Westwood’s fence and wall rules in §195-130G, residential fences and walls generally cannot exceed six feet above predisturbed ground level. Front-yard fences are limited to four feet and must be at least 50% open. The section also protects sight triangles and requires the finished fence side to face adjoining properties.

Take dated photos and note existing elevations before adding soil, changing drainage or removing an old wall. Mark the proposed fence top and ground line on a simple elevation drawing. Ask zoning staff how the predisturbed-ground measurement applies along each sloping segment; measuring only the exposed panel after landscaping can miss the question the code addresses.

A fence permit and a retaining-wall review are different

The same code section specifies a zoning permit for fences permitted under its provisions. Proposed retaining walls four feet or higher require review and approval by the Borough Engineer and Building Department. Westwood also has additional wall provisions, so a shorter wall is not automatically exempt from all review.

If the fence will sit beside or on top of a wall, submit the combined arrangement. Include the wall’s exposed faces, changes in grade and the fence mounting detail. Ask the officials which measurements, permits and inspections apply to both parts. Do not assume approval for one component covers the other.

Where do I find the Westwood application?

The Westwood Zoning Office’s applications and forms page links the residential zoning application and zoning map. Use that current route instead of an old downloaded form. Before submitting, ask what survey, dimensions, ownership details and supporting drawings staff need for your particular project.

Show the proposed line, gates, street frontages, driveway exits and any easements you know about. For a shared boundary, review our New Jersey property-line planning guide before treating an existing fence as the surveyed property line.

Choose a style that fits the approved location

An open street-facing design and a private backyard can call for different panels. Explore aluminum fence installation for an open appearance and vinyl fence installation for privacy where the approved plan allows it. A material label alone does not establish the required percentage of openings.

For a pool enclosure, ask the Building Department about the separate barrier and gate requirements before choosing hardware or removing an existing barrier.

Bring a complete plan to your estimate

Have your survey, existing-grade photos, fence specifications and wall drawings ready. Then request a Westwood fence estimate. The four-step installation process below takes you through requesting an estimate, exploring options, confirming details and installation with a final review.
